How to get registered as a MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST in New Zealand

Overseas-Trained Registration: Medical Laboratory Scientist

You can apply for registration as a medical laboratory scientist if you have an international degree in medical laboratory science or an equivalent. Every application will be taken into account individually.

Provisional registration and supervision period

If you get registration, you will be required to be under the supervision of a qualified medical laboratory scientist or an approved registered healthcare practitioner for a minimum of three months to a maximum of 24 months in order to allow for familiarization with the New Zealand healthcare setting.

Your supervisor might need to submit interim progress reports to the Council if your provisional registration period lasts longer than six months. The date of these reports will be communicated to you and your supervisor when your first annual practicing certificate is given. Refer to the Council's supervision policy for more details about working under supervision.

Applying for APC

Prior to beginning employment as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in New Zealand after registration, you must submit an application to the Council for an annual practising certificate (APC).
