Calabar Boat Mishap: 3 Missing Medical Students Confirmed Dead

 

Cross River Commissioner Gyogon Augustine Grimah has confirmed three medical students who went missing after their boat capsized during a cruise on Saturday in Calabar dead.

Thirteen medical students across different universities in Nigeria were involved in the boat accident.

Ten of them were rescued alive as soon as the boat capsized with three missing.

It was gathered that locals saw the floating bodies on Monday morning and alerted Marine Police.

The Police Commissioner said they recovered the bodies of two males and one female.

He said the bodies will be kept under proper care and contact made with relevant families before handover.

The medical students were in Calabar last week for the annual Nigeria Medical Students Association Health Week.

The week is hosted yearly in any member university within the country.

The 2023 edition was hosted in Calabar with various activities, including educational and social activities.

One of the social activities was a visit to the Marina Resorts and some students decided to enjoy a cruise ride in the resort.

President of the Nigeria Medical Students Association (NiMSA) Mr. Ejim Egbe, said the first set of 13 students had a safe ride and returned to shores.

Though they expressed some concerns, the management assured of safety before the second set of 13 boarded.

The accident occurred with the second set while 10 victims were rescued alive.

Operatives of the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested 47 (forty-seven) suspected internet fraudsters.

The suspects were arrested on June 23, 2023, at Ikere Road and Iworoko areas of Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State following intelligence on their alleged cyber fraud activities in the State.

The suspects are Adeyemi Joshua Adeniran, Ajaye Redmond Damilare, Nwaji Mathew, Jegede Boluwaji Victor, Oyetunji Sunday Wole, Damilola Awopetu Ayomide, Ajayi Temitope Ayomide, Babajide Adebisi Victor, Balogun Precious Akinwale, Obie Jacob Onatakaroma, Olonitola Olamilekan, Ajewole Ojo Kayode, Aina Toluwani Emmanuel, Adebayo Akinwumi Oluwadamilare, Omowaye Oluwatosin Olamilekan, Oyewale Francis Oyomilekan, Arowolo Ayomide Gift, Shotonwa Babatunde Omotoyosi, Ochochie Silas Ochola, Ojo Seyitan David, Onile Ayodeji Raphael and Abiodun Oluwatosin Opeyemi.

Others are: Adebayo Gbenga Musbau, Oyebade Ayomide Olamide, Egunjobi Samuel Gbenga, Oladokun Toheeb Adekola, Adesola Benjamin Adebowale, Edamisan Olakunle, Adesola Isaac Babatunde, Oyewole Gideon David, Lawal Tosimile Moses, Adeleke Adekunle Samson, Oladiti Abiodun Akanji, Ajayi Charles Temitayo, Adeyemi Oluwasegun Adeboye, Ernest Solomon Temitope and Atoun Olalekan Timilehin.

The rest are: Olorunyomi Sina Ayo, Babatunde Emmanuel Babalola, Yusuf Saka Olaoluwatobi, Falaye Babatunde Temitope, Ilesanmi Damilola Ayomide, Badmus Yusuf Omobolaji, Komolafe Emmanuel Feranmi, Babajide Adebisi Victor, Adamolekun Olamiji and Oshatimi Samuel Omoniyi.

In a related development, the Oyo State Command of the Nigerian Police arrested and handed over two cybercrime suspects, Emiola Usman and Kamorudeen Quayum, to the Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC, for further investigation.

Items recovered from the suspects include fifteen (15) exotic cars, sixteen (16) laptops, seventy-seven (77) mobile phones and other incriminating documents, among others.

The suspects will be charged to court as soon as the investigations are concluded.

Football administrator Takyi Arhin has stated that finding a replacement for retired professional striker Asamoah Gyan will be difficult.

He claimed that Asamoah Gyan’s skill and finesse were unrivalled and that finding a player of his calibre would take a long time.

Speaking on Rainbow Sports, he stated that finding a player with Asamoah’s level of play would be a miracle.

”Finding a replacement for Asamoah Gyan would take time. I’m not aware of any other striker of Asamoah Gyan’s calibre. We don’t have strikers with Asamoah Gyan’s level of play. I’m not aware of any striker who can compete with Asamoah Gyan. It would take a miracle to land a player of his calibre.

Sammy Awuku supports Akuapem North BECE candidates with educational materials

 

The Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mr. Samuel Awuku, donated some educational materials to the Akuapem North Municipal Education Directorate on Friday, June 23, 2023, to support the 2023 mock examinations of B.E.C.E. candidates in the Municipality.

Among the items donated were 2,420 mathematical sets, mock examination papers, and an unspecified cash amount.

“This is my modest contribution to help improve education in the Municipality. Indeed, these students are the future of the Municipality and Ghana in general. This donation will cover all schools in the municipality, including private schools because if the students do well, it will uplift the image of the Akuapem North Municipality”, he noted.

On his part, the Municipal Education Director, Mr. Lawrence Dzah, praised and thanked Mr. Awuku for his continuous support in the area of education in the municipality.

He indicated that, due to the same support the directorate received last year, the results of the students were better than in previous years.
Over 2,400 students are expected to sit for the BECE in the Akuapim North Municipality this year.

Korle Bu begins screening newborns for hearing problems.

 

Now, before being released from the labor ward, newborn babies delivered at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra will undergo a hearing impairment screening.

The screening will be carried out as part of the hospital's routine newborn care. There will be a charge associated with any extra interventions that are required, though.

Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, the chief executive officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, announced this yesterday in Accra at the beginning of a newborn hearing screening project the hospital is working on with Path Medical of Germany and Med El, a major Austrian supplier of hearing implant systems.

 Dr. Ampomah referred to the project as being extremely significant and stated that as a part of the project, they were looking at developing a teamwide approach involving midwives, obstetricians, and pediatricians so that each of those individuals who were the first to come into contact with any newborn child would be sensitive enough to provide the child with the initial screening on hearing impairment.

He stated that in order to boost their numbers and make themselves more accessible and available to patients, they were also considering deepening training as part of the project.

According to him, the hospital wants to reach a stage where neonatal screenings are done for all childhood anomalies as well as hearing impairment, so that instances can be identified early and treated to prevent conditions from getting worse.

He claimed that the project was being carried out not just in Korle Bu but also in collaboration with many of their sister health institutions so that it might eventually be implemented throughout the entire nation.

Early detection

Dr. Ampomah noted that a sizable percentage of infants were born with hearing impairments, and that if identified and treated early enough, these children may develop properly.

He claimed that if children with hearing impairments were not identified and treated as soon as possible after birth, they struggled throughout life and were even thought to be stupid by some because they were unable to understand what was being spoken to them.

According to Dr. Kenneth Baidoo, Head of the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Department at the Korle Bu Teaching institution, the institution had previously conducted spot checks for hearing impairment in neonates, particularly in those who were admitted to the NICU.

However, this research will be extensive, allowing parents of every baby born at the hospital to learn about their child's hearing by the time they arrived for their initial postnatal evaluation.

He explained that when children with hearing impairment received late diagnosis and treatment, their hearing quality would differ from that of children whose cases received early diagnosis and prompt treatment.

Impairment

He noted that genetic factors, infections contracted during pregnancy, extreme jaundice in babies, medications given to them when they have serious infections, and lack of oxygen after delivery are the main causes of hearing impairment in children.

According to Dr. Baidoo, depending on the severity of the kid's disability, hearing aides might be given to the child to improve their hearing, while cochlear implants were an option for children with severe hearing loss.

Peter Böttcher of Path Medical and Stephanie Unterrieder, MA, Business Development and Regional Manager for Africa of Med El, gave the program's health professionals the advice to let parents know that the hospital's screening program is available.

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital received four hearing screening tools and one hearing diagnostic tool as part of the collaboration.

Quayson's motion to stop daily hearings is denied by the court.

 

James Gyakye Quayson's plea to stop the trial from proceeding daily until the Assin-North by-election was held on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, was denied by the High Court in Accra.  

The Court, presided over by Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh, ruled on Friday, June 23, that its decision to continue the case on a daily basis on June 20, 21, and 23 was legal. 

The prosecuting attorney's attorneys did not establish a legal violation of the orders imposed, the presiding judge continued, necessitating a reconsideration. 

"The purported disparaging remarks made by the Attorney General are the only new information. 

Justice Yanzuh emphasized that adjournments were at the court's discretion and said, "These claims are not relevant for me to evaluate my decision. 

The trial has been postponed to June 29, 2023, so Quayson's attorneys can continue questioning the first witness for the prosecution.

Because the particular court chamber was unavailable on Mondays, there would be a by-election on June 27, 2023, and there would be a public holiday on June 28, 2023, the court chose June 29.
