7 WAYS TO START AND IMPROVE SOCIAL SKILLS

 








Your social life and career may suffer if you frequently feel uncomfortable in social situations or find it difficult to start conversations because you are shy. The good news is that you can start honing your social skills by using these few tips to enable you initiate conversations with assurance.


  •       ACT SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS.

    Even if you do not feel like being sociable, you may act in a more social manner. Do not let your fear keep you back. Regardless of your feelings of trepidation, decide to talk to new individuals and engage in conversation. It will become simpler with time, and your social abilities will advance swiftly.


  •       IF NECESSARY, BEGIN MODESTLY.

    If attending a party or being around a crowd sounds intimidating to you, start small. Visit the cashier at the grocery store and say “Thank you”, or visit a restaurant and place your order. Gradually practice with small chat.


  •      ENCOURAGE OTHERS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES.

    The majority of individuals actually want to talk about themselves. Ask the person about their job, interests or family. Make it clear that you want to hear what is being stated. You can also ask open-minded questions that can engage them for a while.

     


  •        MAKE GENEROUS COMPLIMENTS AND RECOGNIZE YOUR BODY LANGUAGE.

    An excellent method to start a discussion is with a compliment. Compliment your neighbor on his looks, his new automobile or a co-worker on a presentation they made at a meeting. Receiving compliments can demonstrate to people your amicability. Ensure you as well pay attention to the manner in which you present yourself. Make efforts to look at ease, maintain acceptable eye contacts, and project an attitude of openness to discussion.


  •      STUDY BOOKS FREQUENTLY AND JOIN A SUPPORT GROUP.

    There are several books available that may teach you certain social skills and conversation starters. Though reading about these abilities will not make you an expert until you repeatedly act on them. Also read on recent events and developments so you will have something to discuss with others about.  Do not neglect joining a support group as it can help reduce or expunge social awkwardness, anxiety or shyness in learning and, maximizing new skills. Your social skills will start to advance and you might be able to meet some new pals who can relate to your struggles.


  •        DISPLAY REFINED CONDUCT.

    Social skills may be greatly enhanced by having good manners. Practice being kind, courteous and having proper table manners.


  •      RECOGNIZE AND REPLACE UNFAVOURABLE THOUGHTS.

    If you frequently think about unfavorable things about your social encounters, it can happen. For instance, a person who believes he will humiliate himself at a party could sit in the corner.  Because no one spoke to him t the party, he would depart with the impression that he was uncomfortable.

    Determine the negative ideas that are probably making you bad. Change them to more practical ones like “I can talk to people and I can meet new people.” Do not let unproductive thoughts consume your thinking.
